Sonoma County has more EVs per capita than most of California, and most of them charge at home. A clean Level 2 install pays back fast: it's faster, safer, and cheaper than relying on public chargers. Here's what's actually involved — from panel check to plug-in.
Level 1 vs. Level 2 vs. Level 3
Level 1 is the cord that came with your car — 120V, 3–5 miles per hour. Level 2 (240V, 32–48A) is the right choice for home — 25–40+ miles per hour. Level 3 (DC fast charging) is industrial-grade and not a residential install.
Hardwired or NEMA 14-50 plug?
Both are legitimate. A hardwired charger is permanently wired in and supports up to 48A continuous, ideal for fast charging and dual-EV households. A NEMA 14-50 outlet is portable and lets you swap chargers — capped at 40A continuous and now requires GFCI protection by code.
Panel readiness and load calculation
A 40A or 48A circuit is a meaningful chunk of a 100A or 200A panel. We always run a load calc before quoting. Older Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, and Windsor homes often need a panel upgrade or a load-management device first.
Best placement for the charger
Most homeowners want the charger near where the car parks — driver's side rear or front. Things to consider:
- Distance from the panel — longer runs cost more in conduit and wire
- Indoor vs. outdoor — outdoor units must be NEMA 3R/4 rated
- Cable management — get the right cable length so you don't drag it on the ground
- Future second EV — pull conduit for two even if you only install one now
Permits and inspection
Sonoma County and its cities require a permit for any new EV charger circuit. We pull the permit, install to current CEC, and handle the inspection. Most jurisdictions inspect within a week.
Typical installed pricing in Sonoma County
Straightforward installs with the panel adjacent to the charger location run $1,200–$2,500. Longer wire runs, panel upgrades, or trenching push it higher. We quote firm in writing.
- Adjacent garage install with capacity in the panel: $1,200–$1,800
- 30–60' run through finished walls: $1,800–$2,800
- Outdoor wall-mount with conduit: $2,200–$3,500
- With panel upgrade: add $3,500–$6,500 for the panel work
