Smart lighting can be transformative or it can be a daily annoyance. The line between the two is in the system you pick and how it's wired. Here's the framework we use when designing smart lighting for Sonoma County homes.
Switches > bulbs
The fastest disappointment with smart lighting is starting with bulbs. The light only works if the wall switch is on, which means everyone has to remember not to use the switch. Switch-based systems (Lutron Caséta, RA3, Leviton Decora Smart) put control where everyone already reaches.
Lutron is the workhorse
Caséta is the entry-level system — strong app control, scenes, voice. RA3 is the next tier, used on whole-home jobs with 30+ devices. Both are wired in standard switch boxes and work over a proprietary wireless mesh that does not bog down with WiFi traffic. We install Lutron more than any other brand for a reason.
Scenes are the actual value
Once switches are smart, the magic is in scenes:
- Movie — kitchen and dining at 10%, sconces at 30%, everything else off
- Dinner — dining pendant at 50%, kitchen task at 30%, accent lights on
- Goodnight — all interior off, low-level path lights and exterior security on
- Welcome home — front entry and kitchen on at sunset arrival
Voice control — the right level
Voice via HomeKit, Alexa, or Google works. The right level of voice control is 'turn on movie mode,' not asking it to dim each lamp. Set scenes and trigger them by voice; that's the ergonomic sweet spot.
When tunable white earns its keep
Casambi and Ketra fixtures shift color temperature throughout the day — warm in the morning, cooler at midday, warm again in the evening. Worth it in kitchens, home offices, and great rooms; usually overkill in bedrooms and baths.
