Sonoma County is home to thousands of properties built before modern electrical codes existed. Many homes in Santa Rosa's Railroad Square, Petaluma's historic downtown, Healdsburg's residential neighborhoods, and Sebastopol's rural farmhouses still contain original wiring that's 50, 70, or even 100 years old. This wiring — whether it's knob-and-tube, cloth-insulated, or aluminum — poses serious fire and safety risks to your family.
Eleos Electric provides complete whole-home rewiring services throughout Sonoma County. We replace outdated wiring with modern copper conductors rated for today's electrical demands, install a new electrical panel, add properly grounded outlets and GFCI/AFCI protection, and bring your entire system up to current NEC and California Electrical Code standards. Every rewiring project includes all required Sonoma County building permits and inspections.
Knob-and-tube (K&T) wiring was standard in homes built before 1940, and it's still present in many older Sonoma County homes. This wiring uses ceramic knobs and tubes to run single conductors through the structure, with no ground wire and no insulation between the hot and neutral wires. While K&T was adequate for the low electrical loads of its era (a few lights and a radio), it was never designed for today's appliance loads.
The biggest dangers of knob-and-tube wiring include: deteriorating rubber insulation that cracks and exposes bare copper, improper modifications made by previous owners who spliced modern wire onto K&T without junction boxes, and insulation blown over K&T wiring in attics (K&T was designed to dissipate heat into open air). Many insurance companies in California now refuse to insure homes with active knob-and-tube wiring, or charge significantly higher premiums.
Our K&T replacement process involves running new Romex (NM-B) copper wiring through the existing walls, ceiling, and floor cavities, connecting to a new modern panel, and properly abandoning the old K&T in place. We minimize wall damage by fishing new wires through existing cavities and using strategic access points. After rewiring, you'll have grounded three-prong outlets throughout, AFCI-protected bedroom circuits, GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, and exterior areas, and a modern panel that can handle all of your electrical needs.
Homes built in Sonoma County during the late 1960s and 1970s — particularly in the subdivisions of Windsor, Rohnert Park, and parts of Santa Rosa — commonly have aluminum branch circuit wiring. Aluminum wiring expands and contracts more than copper, causing connections to loosen over time. Loose connections create hot spots that can ignite surrounding materials.
Depending on the extent of your aluminum wiring, we offer two remediation approaches: complete replacement with copper wiring (the most thorough solution), or COPALUM crimp connection repair at every termination point (an approved method that creates a permanent copper-to-aluminum connection). We assess your specific situation and recommend the approach that best balances safety, cost, and disruption.
A whole-home rewiring project typically takes 5-10 days depending on the size of your home, the accessibility of wall and ceiling cavities, and the complexity of your electrical needs. Here's what to expect:
From the Victorians of Petaluma to the bungalows of Santa Rosa, the farmhouses of Sebastopol to the wine country estates of Sonoma and Healdsburg, and the mid-century homes of Windsor and Rohnert Park — we've rewired them all. Our 35+ years of experience in Sonoma County means we understand the unique construction methods used in each era and each neighborhood, allowing us to route new wiring efficiently with minimal disruption to your home's character.

Answers
Rewire is warranted when you have knob-and-tube, cloth-insulated wiring, aluminum branch wiring, repeatedly failing circuits across multiple rooms, or insurance issues with the existing electrical system. Eleos assesses in person before recommending.
Typical single-family rewires run $12,000โ$28,000 depending on square footage, wall access, and whether a panel upgrade is bundled. Eleos quotes room-by-room so you see where the money goes.
Most rewires take 2โ4 weeks. Phased rewires (one room at a time while you stay in the house) take longer; vacant-home rewires go faster. Eleos schedules around your occupancy needs.
Not usually. Eleos rewires occupied homes by doing one zone at a time and restoring power each evening. Kitchens and primary bathrooms are scheduled as short outages. Vacant homes allow faster work.
Most rewires are bundled with a service upgrade because the existing panel is usually original. Eleos quotes them together so the permit, inspection, and PG&E work happen in one pass.
