How Standby Generators Work

A standby generator sits outside your home or business, connected to your electrical panel through an automatic transfer switch (ATS). When utility power is lost, the ATS detects the outage within seconds, disconnects your home from the grid, and signals the generator to start. Power is typically restored to your home within 10-30 seconds — automatically, without any action on your part. When utility power returns, the ATS transfers back to grid power and shuts down the generator.

The generator runs on natural gas or propane, so there's no need to refuel during extended outages (unlike portable generators that run on gasoline). It exercises automatically once a week to ensure it's ready when needed, and Generac's Mobile Link system lets you monitor your generator's status from your smartphone.

Generator Sizing for Your Needs

Proper sizing is critical. An undersized generator will struggle to power your loads and may shut down under overload. An oversized generator wastes fuel and costs more than necessary. We perform a detailed load calculation based on the specific circuits you want to power during an outage.

• 10-16KW Air-Cooled — Ideal for smaller homes. Powers essential circuits: refrigerator, lights, heating/cooling, sump pump, and a few outlets. Most affordable option.
• 20-26KW Air-Cooled — Powers an entire average-sized home, including central air conditioning, kitchen appliances, and most circuits. Our most popular residential option.
• 30-60KW Liquid-Cooled — For larger homes, estates, and small commercial properties. Powers entire property including well pumps, hot tubs, workshops, and all appliances.
• 60-100KW Liquid-Cooled — Commercial and large estate applications. Wineries, restaurants, retail, medical offices, and multi-building properties throughout Sonoma County.
