A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a wall- or floor-mounted lithium battery that stores electricity from your solar panels or the utility grid and releases it when you need it. The system includes the battery, an inverter, and a smart energy controller that decides — second by second — whether to charge, discharge, sell back to the grid, or run your home in island mode during an outage.
